With this platform, we can deliver a wide array of flow cytometry assays:

• High-dimensional immunophenotyping (T cells, B cells, NK, myeloid, ILCs)
• Viability/apoptosis, mitochondrial health, ROS and cell cycle analyses
• Functional assays: cytokine staining, proliferation, degranulation

Unlike systemic plasma levels, microdialysis provides a true picture of drug penetration into the tumour helping to uncover heterogeneous distribution and the impact of the blood-tumour barrier.

Our approach involves precise stereotaxic surgery, tumour validation, and sampling from both tumour and healthy brain tissue enabling direct, comparative pharmacokinetic analysis.

We had great fun networking, supporting wellbeing, nurturing our community and raising money for Stevenage based STEMPOINT , the educational charity dedicated to widening access into science, engineering, maths and technology subjects across EastAnglia.

Over 30 players took part in the cross-campus sports event, we welcomed teams from GSK, ImmuONE, Tessellate BIO, Neobe Therapeutics, Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst, Pharmidex , MFX, Antikor Biopharma Ltd – and of course STEMPOINT - who came to join us.

Pharmidex (UK) part of consortium awarded €4 million Eurostars grant
Grant will support Addex mGlu2 NAM cognition program for mild neurocognitive disorder (mNCD)

Neurosterix https://www.neurosterix.com (SIX and Nasdaq: ADXN), a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company pioneering allosteric modulation-based drug discovery and development has announced that it has led a consortium which has been awarded a €4 million Eurostars grant to support its metabotropic glutamate 2 (mGlu2) receptor negative allosteric modulator (NAM) program for mild neurocognitive disorder (mNCD). The project, named COGNI+, has been awarded the grant to deliver clinical candidates ready for IND enabling studies. The consortium includes Naason Science (South Korea), BioAxis Research (Netherlands), Pharmidex Pharmaceutical Services (UK) and Stichting Radboud Universiteit (Netherlands).

“Our mGlu2 NAM program has made significant advances in our understanding of the function of mGlu2 receptors and their role played in neuronal processes involved in cognition. Representative compounds of our unique and highly mGlu2-selective chemical series have demonstrated groundbreaking proof of principle in preclinical models of mild neurocognitive disorders,” said Robert Lütjens, Head of Discovery Biology at Addex. “We are delighted to have brought together this team of partners, each with complementary expertise, to expedite lead optimization and progress multiple compounds through the clinical selection phase as swiftly as possible in pursuit of identifying a potential lead drug candidate.”

“This Eurostars grant is another example of how we are successfully securing non-dilutive funding to advance our portfolio of exciting first or best in class allosteric modulator programs,” said Tim Dyer, CEO of Addex. “As a reminder, our ADX71149 epilepsy program is on track to report Phase 2 data in Q2 2024 and we continue to make solid progress toward achieving other strategic objectives, including securing industry partners for certain programs.”

About mGlu2 NAM

Glutamate is the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain, and alterations in its release, receptor function, or signaling pathways can have profound effects on cognitive processes. Inhibition of ionotropic glutamate receptors (NMDA & AMPA) has been shown to impair cognition, while their activation as a strategy to enhance cognition has been hampered by challenges linked to adverse effects. The mGlu2 receptor is expressed in the brain on presynaptic nerve terminals where it modulates glutamate release, helping to maintain the balance of excitatory neurotransmission. Selective inhibition of mGlu2 receptors may therefore represent a different approach to increase glutamatergic tone, devoid of adverse effects linked to direct ionotropic receptor activation. Addex has made significant investment and progress in developing novel mGlu2 NAMs that possess high brain penetration and will selectively modulate the mGlu2 receptors only. These characteristics are significant improvements compared to traditional, orthosteric inhibitors, which are poorly selective for glutamate receptors and necessitate development of prodrugs to allow delivery to the brain, significantly increasing the cost of goods.

About mNCD

mNCD is a state of moderate cognitive decline leading to a lower quality-of-life, loss of autonomy and often dementia and associated psychiatric symptoms (depression, anxiety). It affects approximately 15% of the population over 60 years of age and is associated with a high societal impact, including loss of working hours, productivity, and caregiver burden. Current therapeutic approaches are not widely used due to their lack of efficacy and many side effects. With no specific therapeutic interventions available for mNCD, there is a strong medical need for new approaches that halt cognitive decline in these patients.

Neurosterix

Neurosterix is a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of an emerging class of novel orally available, small molecule drugs known as allosteric modulators for neurological disorders. Allosteric modulators offer several potential advantages over conventional, non-allosteric molecules and may offer an improved therapeutic approach to conventional "orthosteric" small molecule or biological drugs. Addex's allosteric modulator drug discovery platform targets receptors and other proteins that are recognized as essential for therapeutic intervention. Addex's lead drug candidate, ADX71149 (mGlu2 positive allosteric modulator or PAM), developed in collaboration with Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., is in a Phase 2 clinical trial for the treatment of epilepsy and data is expected in Q2 2024. Addex's second clinical program, dipraglurant (mGlu5 negative allosteric modulator or NAM), is under preclinical evaluation for future development in post-stroke recovery. Indivior PLC has licensed Addex’s GABAB PAM program for the development of drug candidates, with a focus on substance use disorder. Addex is also advancing a broad preclinical pipeline, which includes development of a range of GABAB PAMs for cough, M4 PAM for schizophrenia and other forms of psychosis, mGlu7 NAM for stress related disorders and mGlu2 NAM for mild neurocognitive disorders. Addex shares are listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and American Depositary Shares representing its shares are listed on the NASDAQ Capital Market, and trade under the ticker symbol "ADXN" on each exchange.

Successful MHRA inspection

Pharmidex and Sixfold awarded Innovate UK funding to develop and validate their RNA delivery system, Mergo®.

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, March 1, 2023 – Sixfold Bioscience, the RNA Architects, have been awarded a highly competitive Innovate UK Biomedical Catalyst to further develop and validate their RNA delivery system, Mergo ^® .

Just over $1M (£0.89M) was awarded by the Biomedical Catalyst (BMC) to support the development of Sixfold’s Mergo ^® .

The collaborative project will utilise Pharmidex and Medicines Discovery Catapult (MDC) expertise in advanced preclinical development and in vivo imaging to generate further preclinical data on Sixfold’s RNA delivery system for an undisclosed non-hepatic disease. Sixfold will be contributing their expertise in computationally-enabled Mergo optimisation, high-throughput RNA synthesis and preclinical screening to the project.

Sixfold has demonstrated the ability of their Mergo ^® system to deliver RNA therapeutics to currently uncatered cell types. The output from this collaboration will be used to further one of their more advanced assets and generate data to improve their ML driven RNA delivery platform.

HeatNMof is a heating-triggered drug release from nanometric metal-organic framework composites

The Initial Training Network HeatNMof aims to develop high quality training opportunities for 12 early-stage-researchers (ESRs) in the area of materials science, advanced characterization and biomedicine.

HeatNMof is training the next generation of materials scientists in nanomedicine to exploit heat-triggered release for delivery of anti-tumour drugs. The network is focusing on one of the most promising classes of nanocomposite carriers, inorganic nanoparticles (iNPs) associated to nanoscaled metal organic frameworks (nanoMOFs).

The successful development of this project, involving seven academic, three industrial partners, six partner organisations (5 universities and 1 company), will contribute to the improvement of the highly societal relevant cancer therapy..

Covid-19 In-Silico drug discovery facilities

The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is the cause of COVID-19, a disease that has affected millions of people across the globe. As part of an Innovate UK funded project (No:58909), Pharmidex's In-Silico team have established a high-throughput screening capability for testing compounds against known structural proteins of SARS-CoV-2. As a result, we can generate 3D pharmacophore models to identify novel ligands and provide predictions of their ADMET properties.

Pharmidex is keen to collaborate with interested parties seeking to identify new medicines for COVID-19 using In-Silico directed strategies, either to identify protein targets that interact with clinically tested drugs, or screen compound libraries for potential hits at selected protein targets.

In addition, Pharmidex's Integrated Therapeutics Group have the necessary translational capabilities required to exploit any new drug targets efficiently and effectively.

Pharmidex are taking all the necessary steps to ensure the progression of client studies during these difficult time.

COVID-19: Pharmidex Contingency Plan

We are taking all necessary steps to ensure that studies proceed, while preserving the health and safety of staff. Summary of key steps taken at Pharmidex:

- Following the relevant guidelines issued by Public Health England.

- Limiting access to only essential people in our laboratories and cancelling/rescheduling all non-critical visitors. All visitors must confirm COVID-19 status prior to arrival.

- Cancelled all non-essential business travel.

- Closely communicating with suppliers regarding the status of their inventories and their business continuity plans and identifying alternate sources for supplies.

- Implemented strict sanitization practices to prevent cross contamination between staff, including providing our staff with resources and up-to-date information and guidance.

- To prevent the potential spread of the infection amongst employees, staff will declare any potential close contact with infected individuals and follow the relevant health guidelines.

- Our operations team will ensure adequate staffing cover so as not to compromise client studies.

We will keep you updated if the situation changes resulting in any impact on progression of your projects.

Pharmidex Part of Consortium in New Innovate UK Grant

A Consortium led by Intract Pharma has successfully been awarded funding from Innovate UK to develop a scalable manufacturing process for novel oral antibody products using it's proprietary Soteria® technology. Pharmidex are also members of this consortium together with Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) and Quay Pharma.

Intract Pharma Ltd has successfully been awarded funding from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, to develop a scalable manufacturing process for novel oral antibody products using its proprietary Soteria® technology. The collaborative industrial research project, totalling over £1.4 million, was secured through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund for innovative projects in medicines manufacturing. This program will be conducted by a consortium led by Intract, including the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), Pharmidex and Quay Pharma.

Each member of the consortium brings unique expertise in drug development and manufacture, with an extensive understanding of pharmaceutical formulation. The project seeks to develop a manufacturing process for Intract’s revolutionary Soteria® technology which can be scaled in a commercially viable manner. Soteria® transforms painful and inconvenient injectable therapies into safe, simple oral formulations, and allows targeting and concentration of the antibody at the site of disease in the gut to improve therapeutic efficacy whilst minimising risk of systemic toxicity.

Pharmidex welcomes Japanese students from Meji University to experience a day in industry.

Pharmidex welcomed three Pharmacy students from Meiji University to spend a day with us visiting our sites and meeting with staff.

Kanon Aoki, Erika Kondo and Ayaka Kaku are currently at the University of Hertfordshire on an exchange programme.

During the visit the students had the opportunity to find out more about the type of work that is carried out at Pharmidex. As always, the students were a pleasure to host and were a credit to both Universities.

The Pharmidex team, Specfically including Dr Moh Tadayyon, Dr Mo Alavijeh and Dr Chris Ireson will be attending the Swiss Biotech Day in Basel, Switzerland, 3 May 2018.

The Swiss Biotech Day has long become the standard annual get-together of the Swiss biopharmaceutical industry. And Basel, as one of the most vivid cities in terms of biotechnological and pharmaceutical research, development and production, proved to be the ideal location.

The SBD is not just the place to be for members of the Swiss Biotech Association, who traditionally meet there for the association’s Annual General Assembly. As always, the event targets entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, analysts, BD&L, political decision makers, industry stakeholders and media.

Pharmidex will be attending the Global Business Accelerator Program which is run by the Enterprise Europe Network and supported by Innovate UK.

The Enterprise Europe Network, supported by Innovate UK, are visiting Switzerland to focus on the pharmaceutical technology industry. The chosen companies will have the opportunity to meet pharmaceutical companies and key stakeholders based in Basel and attend ProcureCon Pharma in Zürich for the next three days

The Swiss pharmaceutical sector is a major employer with more than 40,000 people working directly for the industry. If the indirect work created through ancillary industries is included, as many as 172,000 jobs are related to the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, it accounts for up to a third of all Swiss exports, and the productivity of the industry is four times as high as that of the economy as a whole.

Three big clusters – the Lake Geneva area, the Basel region and Zürich-Zug-Lucerne – account for the lion’s share of the gross value added of the Swiss pharmaceutical industry and present many collabartive opputunities for UK companies.

During the trip Pharmidex will also be attending ProcureCon Pharma, organised by Worldwide Business Research, will take place from 13 to 15 March 2018 in Zürich. Innovate UK award BioMoti, Pharmidex and Queen Mary University of London Biomedical Catalyst grant

Exciting project involving BioMoti, Pharmidex and Queen Mary University.

BioMoti (London, UK), Pharmidex (London, UK) and Queen Mary University of London (London, UK) have been awarded a grant of £662,222 following the Biomedical Catalyst funding competition from Innovate UK (Swindon, UK).

The grant was awarded to support the preclinical studies of the development of novel therapeutic approaches for hard to treat tumors, including advanced ovarian, triple negative breast and pancreatic cancers. Cofunded by a further £226,769 investment from BioMoti and Pharmidex, the project focuses on Oncojan™ from BioMoti, described as a ‘sustained release precision therapeutics platform targeting CD95L mediated tumor immune evasion’. With expertise in preclinical drug development from Pharmidex and mechanisms of disease from Queen Mary University of London, the trio will investigate precision delivery of drugs to solid tumor sites and immune system activation due to CD95L targeting on tumors over the next 2 years. “It is exciting for us to be supported by Innovate UK to explore our platform’s interactions with the immune system following promising efficacy data in cancer models. BioMoti is making great progress on a final seed investment round to support commercialisation and we welcome enquiries from qualified investors,” commented Davidson Ateh (BioMoti). “We are very pleased to join BioMoti and Queen Mary University of London in the preclinical development of the Oncojan™ platform.

This Innovate UK funded project is an exciting approach to cancer therapy that could have a significant impact on patient lives,” stated Chris Ireson (Pharmidex). “We are passionate about what a difference we could make for patients, and it is great to have secured Innovate UK funding,” concluded Joanne Martin (Queen Mary University of London).

The Pharmidex team are proud to present it's latest involvement on the recent publication on African Typanosomiasis which was published in the International journal of antimicrobial agents. Dose-dependent effect and pharmacokinetics of fexinidazole and its metabolites in a mouse model of human African trypanosomiasis - International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is a neglected tropical disease, with a population of 70 million at risk. Current treatment options are limited.

In the search for new therapeutics, the repurposing of the broad-spectrum antiprotozoal drug fexinidazole has completed Phase III trials with the anticipation that it will be the first oral treatment for HAT.

Pharmidex will be attending the University of Sheffield's annual medical school research meeting. The Medical School will hold its 13th Annual Research Meeting on 15th and 16th June 2017 in the Octagon Centre (poster presentations) and the S tudent Union Auditorium (oral presentations).

The meeting will begin on Thursday 15th June 2017 with a programme of events organised by the Medicine, Dentistry and Health Research Staff Association & Medical Postgraduate Society (“Research Success: Having an impact”). We are pleased to announce the invited external speaker and judge will be Professor Gillian Bates from the UCL Institute of Neurology, London (Keynote Lecture Title: “Insights into the molecular basis of Huntington’s Disease”). Our internal judge will be Professor Nigel Clarke (Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Science).

On Friday 16th June 2017, there will be a programme of oral and poster presentations as well as invited speakers and a key-note lecture delivered by Professor Bates. Posters will be displayed throughout the the meeting (15th - 16th June 2017).

Proud to partner in developing novel therapies for Multiple Sclerosis

Pharmidex are proud to partner in developing novel therapies for Multiple Sclerosis as part of a new Innovate UK accepted grant.

This new Venture plans to fight Multiple Sclerosis through ‘NanoMedicine’, which is supported by Cambridge Judge Business School.

The grant itself has been funded £1 million new funding to explore this dieases area. Of the £1 million funding receieved more than £828,000 will be through the government’s Innovate UK BioMedical Catalyst Competition awarded to LIFNanoRx – which has brought together a project team that includes Pharmidex; the University of London’s Blizard Institute – a world-renowned center for treatment of MS; and the Government’s Center for Process Innovation.

Pharmidex joins Horizon 2020 EU project to work on radioactive contamination

Pharmidex partners in European Commission H2020 award

This project aims to stimulate intersectoral and international collaboration within Europe and with an ICPC country, Kazakhstan, in the area of novel nanoporous and nanostructured adsorbents for the treatment of very serious health conditions associated with acute and chronic exposure to external radiation and uptake of heavy metals and radiation as a consequence of accidental, occupational or deliberate activities and events.

This can dramatically lower the quality of life of the people affected and at present the treatment available is costly and inefficient. Radioactive contamination is a particularly serious problem in two of the countries participating in this project, namely, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, on large territories of the Chernobyl zone and around Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, respectively.

A large number of people are affected by living in the areas with elevated level of radioactivity with uncertain long-term consequences to their health and the health of future generations.

The expected impact of the project results is development of efficient and cost-effective methods of protection of first responders, population and cancer patients treated with radiotherapy from elevated doses of external and incorporated radiation and for occupational health protection of personnel working and the population living in areas contaminated with heavy metals.

Meet the Pharmidex team at 8th international Symposium on Microdialysis, the event will take place on May 25th to the 27th 2016. Psykiatrins Hus, Uppsala, Sweden

The 8th International Symposium on Microdialysis, to be held in Uppsala, Sweden, follows on the 7th Symposium in Poitiers, France. We welcome scientists from academia, industry and regulatory agencies for integrated discussions and exchange of experiences concerning microdialysis from three perspectives: preclinical, clinical and analytical. In the history of these microdialysis symposia there has always been a focus on quantitative aspects of the technique.

An important goal with the meeting is thematic sessions with interactions between the different subareas to stimulate translational progress. Important development is being made regarding analytical aspects of microdialysis, as well as regarding material development, allowing for new applications. Clinical microdialysis issues related to chemical monitoring of patients in the neurointensive care setting will also be an important focus at the meeting. Recent developments in the area will be presented by scientists from all-over the world.

Collaboration opportunities in regenerative medicine

Pharmdiex will be attending the Innvoate UK KTN 2016 meeting focused on New Collaboration Opportunities in Regenerative Medicine.

The KTN in collaboration with Innovate UK, Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult, Department of Health and Kings College London are holding an event focussing on new unmet clinical needs, latest developments in regulatory environment and clinical adoption. Following recent developments and the UK’s Regenerative Medicine Expert Group report recommendations, this event will bring together the UK regenerative medicine communities involving industrialists, academics and clinicians from a number of clinical specialities.

The UK is leading the field in the development of cell and gene therapies. The regulatory system now has a number of mechanisms to accelerate the progress of promising therapies including EAMS and the proposed new PRIME scheme. However, practical challenges still exist to the clinical adoption of these new therapies and getting them to patients, including generating sufficient clinical data, achieving reimbursement and embedding therapies in existing or new clinical pathways).

Leading clinicians and experts from a number of organisations will be presenting at this event. Directors and managers from major funding organisations, e.g. Innovate UK, Research Councils, relevant charities will also be invited to support this event.

The main aims of this event are as follows;

To discuss challenges affecting clinical adoption of cell and gene-based therapies.
Facilitate new clinician/industry collaborations in a number of areas of clinical specialities.
Identify barriers to innovation and commercialisation.
Review current funding opportunities and identify funding gaps.
Provide networking opportunities to identify collaborating partners.
Review supporting mechanisms available to accelerate innovation and commercialisation through KTN and partners Innovate UK, Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult organisations.
Review current pre-clinical and clinical trials and identify best practice to accelerate regulatory approvals

Modern drug discovery undergoes continual change in our efforts to more effectively design new life changing therapeutics for patients. One area that has seen a massive increase in focus in recent years has been the need for more translational approaches to many if not all therapeutic areas.

This has stemmed from the increasing appreciation that many of the cellular and animal models, traditionally used for the assessment of efficacy, currently have limited predictive validity to the human diseases we are trying to treat. Additionally, target selection based solely on preclinical validation may be leading to flawed biological hypothesise for putative therapeutics. Together these factors have contributed to the poor clinical success rate in many diseases. As a result there has been an increased focus on identify targets based on a strong understanding of human genetics and disease biology. Additionally drug discovery teams are increasingly co- developing translational approaches to demonstrate target engagement and proof of pharmacology whilst identifying biomarkers to stratify patient populations in which to optimally test proof of concept.

This meeting brings together experts from a variety of imaging and preclinical model backgrounds across a range of diseases (dementia, pain and oncology) to present and discuss their experiences in the various aspects of translational science. This promises to be an exciting and interesting meeting with in depth discussion into how the drug discovery community can better target disease processes, more optimally test novel therapeutics in appropriate populations and ultimately enhance clinical success in producing efficacious therapeutics for patients.

Pharmidex has the pleasure of continuing to host Japanese exchange students.

Yoko Haraguchi and Soko Yoshino visited Pharmidex as part of their academic exchange program between Meiji Pharmaceutical University (Japan) and the Department of Pharmacy, University of Hertfordshire (UK). The Pharmidex team had the pleasure of welcoming a new set of students from Japan on a tour of our facilities and experiencing what it is like to work in SME within the Pharmaceutical sector in the European Union.

Business development manager Dr Martin Barrett was once again pleased to continue the company’s collaborations with Meji Pharmaceutical University and Department of Pharmacy, University of Hertfordshire, furthermore as a company we very much look forward to fostering closer links with all interested parties on mutually beneficial projects. Dr Nkiruka Umaru (Nikkie) of Department of Pharmacy, school of life and medical sciences at University of Hertfordshire also added that University of Hertfordshire is delighted that our Japanese visitors had the opportunity to learn more about the dynamic biotechnology SMEs in UK.

Pharmidex joins London Mayor Boris Johnson's trade mission to US

Boris Johnson is heading to the United States on a six-day trade mission aimed at bolstering London's science and technology industries.

Mr Boris Johnson’s US Trade Mission

Mr Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London has recently been in the US trying to attract investment for British businesses. Mr Johnson is using the US trade mission to promote London's TechCity - which supports the cluster of technology firms based in east London - and MedCity, which was launched last year to support life sciences.

He looked to visit Harvard University’s Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) in an attempt to bring together collaborations between London and Boston life sciences. Mr Johnson said “'The United States is a hugely important trading partner for London, offering massive opportunities for investment in this country and for businesses wanting to expand internationally. I want London to capitalise on the great relationships we have in Boston, New York City and Washington DC”.

In Boston and New York, the Mayor was joined by senior business figures from London's tech and life science sectors including Dr Mo Alavijeh of Pharmidex.
